How Rich Is Kodak Black?
Kodak Black’s net worth is estimated to be $600,000, which is not bad for a 20-year-old rapper who has been in the scene for just under five years. Most of his money comes from his five mixtapes, studio album, multiple singles reaching Billboard charts.
A Rapper was Born
Born Dieuson Octave on June 11, 1997 in Pompano Beach, Florida, Kodak Black was raised by his mother, Marcelene Octave in Golden Acres, a public housing project. Both of his parents are originally from Haiti.
Black started rapping at a very young age. In fact, he would go to a local trap house while still in elementary school to record music. He and his cousin started their own crew, and rapped in front of older boys. When he first started rapping, Black said, “I was seeing some s**t. Even though I wasn’t doing what I was seeing. They say come up in the trap house and record up in the microphone, and stuff, one computer. But as a kid, they was scared to like, really be under that pressure like that. I was rapping, I was coming every day after school, in a trap house just rapping. I wasn’t sellin’ no drugs–I was just in elementary school – I was just coming to rap. But in my eyes, I’m like ‘damn, out of everybody else, they outchere.’ How they keep themselves up, I wanted to keep up, too. Whatever they mottos is, that became my motto. I looked up to them. Whatever I see them do, I did, too.”
The Start of Kodak Black
At the age of six, people gave him the nickname “Black.” In an interview, he revealed that he came up with his stage name after people started calling him Lil’ Black. From there, he made an Instagram account as “Kodak Black,” a name he and his friends thought sounded better, and more unique.
Beginning of His Career
In 2009, when he was 12 years old, Black joined a rap group called Brutal Youngnz before joining The Kolyons. In December 2013, he released his first ever mixtape, Project Baby. The next year, he released his second mixtape, Heart of the Projects. His third mixtape, Institution, was released in 2015. Black states that his style is influenced by rappers like Boosie Badazz and Chief Keef.
In 2015, the young rapper gained more popularity thanks to Drake, who uploaded a video of himself dancing to Black’s song, “Skrt.” In October that year, Kodak Black signed with Atlantic Records, and the following May, he and Lil Uzi Vert announced their national “Parental Advisory Tour,” but Black was a no-show.
What Is Kodak Black Up to These Days?
In 2016, Black was featured on French Montana’s single “Lockjaw.” That June, Black released his fourth mixtape, Lil B.I.G. Pac, which was his first to be featured on Billboard and ranked at No. 49 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Later that month, he was included in XXL‘s 2016 Freshman Class list. By August, “Skrt” peaked at No. 10 on Billboard’s Bubbling Under R&B/Hip-Hop Singles chart. Even while in jail, Black managed to release, “Can I.”
He released yet another single, “Tunnel Vision” on February 17, 2017. The song was a major hit and ranked at No. 6 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, and No. 17 on the Canadian Hot 100.
Black’s debut studio album, Painting Pictures was released on March 31, 2017. His album received positive feedback from fans, and peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200. Kodak Black’s Project Baby 2, the follow-up to Project Baby, was released on August 18, 2017.
Kodak Black’s Girlfriend and Controversies
Kodak Black reportedly has a three-year-old son, King Khalid, with Jammiah Broomfield. The two are not currently together, and are said to have a rocky relationship. A few months ago, Black claimed that his baby mama asked him to shell out money every time he saw his son. In fact, he even asked a judge to give him partial custody of his child. Currently, there is no news about Black’s dating life.
The rapper has seen plenty of controversies throughout his short career. In October 2015, he was arrested and charged with battery, false imprisonment of a child, robbery, and possession of cannabis, and was later released. Black faced more legal issues in 2016, with charges of possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, fleeing from police, cannabis possession, as well as armed robbery and false imprisonment. This past May, he was sentenced to 364 days in prison for violating the terms of his house arrest, but was released in June, though he is still under house arrest.
